I worked with the founders of Scentablez to create a video campaign to launch their eco-friendly air fragrance product to mitigate climate change for a better and more sustainable future.

I self-directed this motion design piece, from the script to the final animations, working through the storyboards and style frames.

Goal

The start-up wanted an appealing video campaign to launch the product on Kickstarter to draw more investors and establish their brand. Once in the market, they would use it as a promotional piece to spread the word and build a customer base.

Challenge

Since Scentablez was just a start-up, ready to enter the market, it did not have any brand guidelines/standards established. I was given a logo and was required to develop a visual language that would vibe with their target audience and also used as a base to formulate a brand ecosystem in the future.

Script

What is it that links all your home air fresheners?

No, it’s not just the pleasant odor, but the fact that it increases your carbon footprint and puts the health of your loved ones at risk, since they both emit volatile organic compounds or VOCs. So, how do you ensure freshness around you without puffing toxins into the air?

Let’s meet the Carters! Shawn’s a good guy who thinks about the family and the environment. One who loves to go on a family outing on a bright sunny day, perhaps a soccer match! (This scene shows daughter and Shawn unzip the soccer gym bag)

Or, kickstart the day with his wife’s best recipe. (This scene shows Shawn’s wife trying a new breakfast recipe in the kitchen when she accidentally burns the toast)

Or, work hard to pitch his green technology idea to make this world a better place. (This scene shows Shawn having discussion in office when the old coffee maker starts smelling)

Well, who could have thought that he could start with a simple step of switching his regular old aerosol spray and plug-in deodorizers with a greener alternative?

Scentablez is the simple alternative that can help Shawn in preserving the “flowery goodness” of life’s most cherished moments along with the health of his family and the environment.

Unlike the plastic canned scents, it comes wrapped in recyclable material and uses only organic compounds that truly create a positive fresh aura, without burning a hole in the wallet, or, the ozone layer.

Scentablez comes in a small pouch so Shawn and family can pick their own and take with them on the go.

All they have to do is to apply pressure, let the pouch expand, and sit back to soothe the mind, body and soul with an explosion of their favourite scents that lasts for hours.

Story

I wanted to keep the narrative character-driven to show different scenarios that explain how Scentablez could be used in daily life. The bold and flat graphic style helped to capture the vibe with a balance of vibrant pinks with yellows and muted greens with blues.

Illustration

The characters in the story are simplified and reduced to match with the playful vibe of the fragrance and yet do not compromise on the significance of the message and concern for the climate change.
